@Sk4zZi0uS Big issue with verizon has been they use CDMA not GSM/UMTS (which AT&T do). Of course 2 different UMTS freqs in US too..
@Sk4zZi0uS Though now they're going LTE at verizon at least that's more recognized globally, so more h/set choice in future perhaps?
@Sk4zZi0uS though I guess an iphone would have to be cdma - nowhere near enough lte yet (if any)
@Sk4zZi0uS I reckon apart from possibly far east iUKmust be about the best place for mobile esp handsets.
@TheVanquish Rumour has it you have a special day today. Have a good one. I only have 7 days to wait...
@Sk4zZi0uS yeah I don't know exact details but that is indeed the reason caling US mobs can be free from here.
@Sk4zZi0uS well they have all of CDMA, GSM, UMTS, WiMax, LTE - so more fragmented. think LTE is standardized tho http://bit.ly/f2hH7w
@TheVanquish nope, just at home
@Sk4zZi0uS there's a big discussion about ITU definition of 4G, whether WiMax or LTE counts (LTE advanced supposedly does). Whatever. fast.
@Sk4zZi0uS oh and t-mobile are using HSPA+ - I guess it's 3.5g+ tho they're calling it 4G
@Sk4zZi0uS yep tricky. I was on 3UK for years, and 3G out/about was great where covered - fast,cheap. But too many patches & nothing at
@Sk4zZi0uS home/work. Just switched to voda. Far fewer gaps (even now) though less 3G and more pricey.. happy with decision though
@josephws @desiibond Of course can already dual boot meego 1.1 (which is unusable ex. dev). Hopefully nice tweaks in 1.4 meego remains os
@LukaSambuca oh cool. a nice pat on the back so to speak.
@Sk4zZi0uS well if it's faster... it may make more sense..
@Sk4zZi0uS Actually may use more data as have cov at work/home and may temporarily not be on wifi
@Sk4zZi0uS vodafone aren't "giving" me anything - I have to buy a package! Went for a 1Gb data bundle
@Sk4zZi0uS Not true, 3Uk built their own 3G network - largest in UK. Then they agreed to move the actual access network into a new company
@Sk4zZi0uS "MBNL" which is a joint venture with T-Mobile. In last few months that's been completed, hence better 3G on both. Then seperately
@Sk4zZi0uS orange/tmob merged, with orange 3G network going into MBNL eventually (still 50% owned by Hutchison 3G)
@Sk4zZi0uS Tesco completely different - they are a true virtual operator.
@Sk4zZi0uS Voda/O2 have the benefit of 900Mhz which has better inbuilding penetration in theory. And ofcom just agreed it could be used not
@Sk4zZi0uS just for 2G services, but now for 3G services too
reading about history of southampton, freemantle etc
learn something every day -- not a footie fan, just found out #southampton won the FA cup in 1976.
also learnt that in 1740 Southampton was a spa town after Chalybeate water was discovered (presumably hence the old name for hospital)
@Nickyhants ah interesting to find these things out! #Austen #Southampton
@noelrooney Who reads the thomson directory - or yellow pages. Ours get chucked unread - same for as many yrs as I remember
@noelrooney just use google search/ask a friend.
@parboo The Chalybeate is the private hospital now known as "spire southampton" - not far from general. Guess thats reason for the name
@VeedubGeezer @AdamManning Never really followed football much - but I know there were better times in the past :-( #SaintsFC
@Nickyhants I always love reading about the history of an area - started today as need to take daughter to place in freemantle/shirley next
@Nickyhants week and started reading about that parish... and then more about southampton generally
@parboo have to go and do some real jobs now... maybe later
@Nickyhants titanic/spitfire I know (like the titanic museam too, and work in hursley)less aware of others. not visited artgal #Southampton
@noelrooney true, btbh those large directories just cause clutter at home, and really want a quick way to find more than address/phon num
@Sk4zZi0uS it's worth pinging @VodafoneUKdeals -- tho I ended up with a discount I get via work (as our corporate phones are on voda)
@Sk4zZi0uS highly variable. streaming is the worst! though even on 3 I never went above 1Gb even with very occasional tethering (IM/email)
@Sk4zZi0uS All of the networks may agree to share specific sites - but with their own antenna/equipment - away from 3/tmob/orange there is
@Sk4zZi0uS "cornerstone" now which was setup to expand vodafone/O2 coverage (another joint venture)
@Sk4zZi0uS On 3G that should be the end games, yes. But different backhaul so speeds could still vary, and only orange/tmob sharing 2G
@Sk4zZi0uS leaving IMO a) 3 best for data:backhaul b) Voda best for coverage - 2G/3G 900Mhz c) tmob/orange best comprimise d) O2 broken??
@Sk4zZi0uS yes virgin is. not sure who they use. Think virgin=tmob, tesco=o2
@Sk4zZi0uS nice! what were you going for. My son @xplane0202 is seriously interested in new phone/package on voda!
ouch (for few seconds)l something fell from ceiling into eye. Quick wash in water and ok though. prob a ceiling flake or something.
right... time to do a job or two
@Sk4zZi0uS home has decent wifi, Work does t mo, but may not be able to use much longer - security/standards issue :-(
@Sk4zZi0uS gigs a day? on mobile? if so surely its @ThreeUK 's "one plan" for you? - unlimited
@Sk4zZi0uS just one thing. just feedback.. i do find that twitlonger thing really annoying as have to click on external link. <140 better
setting up a new network the proper way.. holes and cable...
home network being extended to living room (tv streaming etc). cable in. just rj45s then test. Much faster/more reliable than wireless
woohay. ethernet extended into living room & conected to tv/sky/bluray replacing wireless bridge which was ok but fell over few times
... need some more Gbps switches. For now 100 Mbps should do (only tv streaming!)
@etherealtype np, hopefully getting over the bruises now :-( #ff
@Shelley__Lee Thanks for the #FF
@xplane0202 err yes?
Hoping the whole family can agree on which movie to watch tonight. first curry of new year first...
@kkir I did consider in past, but I took the hit on proper gigabit cabling last year. nothing else can come close
@kkir Just after buying tv/bluray etc I was temp using a wifi bridge until just now when I've done the cable :-)
@etherealtype I do rather love thai but curry night tonight albeit supermarket but it is waitroses fancy ones #cravingoftheday
@etherealtype I've rarely prepared enough to cook nice recipes, but enjoy when I do esp fresh curries so much more flavour #cravingoftheday
@jonmbutterworth intriguing, orange flavour could just work with some crunch sprouts. Um. more heston B I reckon
@bobbyllew Personally I wish we'd gone fully metric - including miles->km mph->kmh gallons->litres etc @paulzink
@paulzink it's silly. I usually have the phone satnav set in km. with a science background miles/inches etc are just a silly pain ...
@rachelclarke Mmm. that sounds rather nice.!
@paulzink Absolutely! I do wish we'd all use YYYY-MM-DD format though - avoids confusion on either side.
@paulzink And of course Celsius...
@paulzink I've seen a few people adopt it in tech docs -- makes a lot of sense for multinational contributors, amont of confusion date form
@paulzink -ats still cause is silly (as indeed can time). Then there's those that get confused about daylight time and use say EST in summer
@paulzink which I think is wrong - should be EDT. Might as well just say UTC-4
@paulzink You can be let off if you want to go kelvin ;-)
@paulzink I always use UTC these days I guess more neutral (putting aside the very fine technical differences leap seconds etc)
@paulzink Now... about this CDMA thing.... OK STOP!
RT @DrLucyRogers: There's another #ISS pass tonight at 18:42, 26 degrees high coming up from the west. Go out & #ISSWave!
cool - got everyone out of the house to see the IS (and point out jupiter). #isswave
@paulzink In US AT&T/tmob large carriers are gsm/umts, not sprint/verizon which are cdma though verizon starting up lte
@unkn0wnvariable clear enough here, but obviously too much ambient light really
@f1_emma thats something we'd all like am sure... though perhaps a photographic memory would be better for the digestion
@unkn0wnvariable you know it goes past in a couple of mins. not there now...
@skybluemandylou in our house you dont need to go very far. will probably last all month
@unkn0wnvariable yes you would have. it was 1842-1844 ish
@unkn0wnvariable yep me too but dont think kids had..
@TopGearBabe indeed. noticed earlier looking for iss. jupiter is still so bright too
wondering why the facebook touch web ui only gives me top news not most recent? #fb
@McLarenFan_Jamm brilliant. thanks! that was so intuitive... not. on mobile/full site it was explicit. thanks.
@MichaelxHell not sure what options you have but am looking forward to about 7-10 Mbps upload from fttc install week tuesday :-)
@MichaelxHell i have about 1Mbps on adsl2+ at 4.7km/60dB ish with 3 dB snrm. pushing it. adsl2+ annexe m can do 2.6 Mbps tops
@MichaelxHell beauty of the fttc (bt infinity) service is its only copper for about 470m in my case. VDSL.
bluray player flashing wait for ages. deferred sw update perhaps....
going to watch the film 'red eye'
@MichaelxHell oh brilliant.
